GLASGOW NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER // SAFETY FIRST!!!
How safety conscious is your newborn photographer?
For those of you who have entrusted me with your brand new little bundle, you'll know how much i harp on and on about newborn safety. And quite rightly so!! Let me explain a little more......
You've just given birth to this beautiful little human and you're overwhelmed by the urge to protect and care for them. So it should be such a privilege and an honour for the photographer that you've chosen to be handed your most treasured possession! I like to think that we all (as photographers) feel that this is the case.
Now that we've got your little baby in the studio and you're encouraged to sit back and relax while we get on with the art of creating some special memories for you, do we forget that this little human has very important need?? I hope not! Of course we all know that babies need to eat and sleep and poop (yep they usually wait till their nappies are off and they are laying in my whitest, brand-new-est blanket for this!) But did your photographer remember to check their temperature?? Don't forget babies have been used to snoozing away in your cosy warm tummy so exposing them to a cold room and cold hard props is not going to be the best idea! And while they're all wrapped up in multiple layers with hats on are they making sure not to allow them to over heat?? Remember babies are unable to regulate their body temperature!
Now we've checked that the room is warm enough (but not too warm!) and we've taken 10 minutes to get them asleep in a certain pose. Is your photographer remembering to check your baby's circulation?? If their arms are legs are tucked into a certain position then their blood flow may be restricted. But don't you worry!!! If your photographer is safety conscious they'll know just what to do to maintain or correct this :)
So your auntie's best friends niece had a newborn session and got the froggy pose so you just HAVE TO HAVE IT!!! Does your photographer know that these type of poses should be done using a composite of 2 (or sometimes more) images which are then merged in photoshop to create the illusion that baby is holding their head up all by themselves. It is way too dangerous to allow a baby to attempt this on their own. Ive heard many a horror story about inexperienced photographers attempting to carry out this pose without proper knowledge or training and resulting in the baby falling forward onto their faces! But I'm sure your well trained safety aware photographer will know this and will be well versed in how to handle these types of poses safely
A little before and after of the beloved froggy pose composited safely.
There are many important factors to consider in newborn photography. Not to mention the safety of the parents whilst they're baking away in my sauna-esque studio hehe)
So please PLEASE do your research!!! Choose a newborn photographer who is safety conscious!! Beautiful images are of course an important factor in your decision but don't let it be at the expense of your little ones wellbeing.
Thanks for your time
